2019 you mean?
At least they announced it instead of just bulldozing the runway in the middle of the night.

This cartoon illustrates something that impacts on my personal experience. When I moved here, I learned that White Rock Lake is encircled by a city park so all lake access is public, and people can still build their fancy expensive houses beyond that and have their view while everyone gets to enjoy the lake up close and personal.
Meanwhile, Lake Ray Hubbard, a monstrous lake nearby, is encircled almost entirely by private property developments with only a few public access points. I think that’s a shame.

My city sold its airport in 2013 to ze Germans and Swiss, but they totally transformed the place for the better. Now it feels like a proper, international airport. Sometimes privatization improves things, especially when the government is incompetent.

This airport is going to be turned into a development; probably with a Trump hotel.

Santa Monica airport is only 8 miles away from LAX, and 16 miles from Hawthorne. I think that has long as any of them gets upgraded to handle the traffic that would go to SMO, preferably Hawthorne since it’s also a Municipal airport, there shouldn’t be much annoyance to the general population. But then, I don’t live in Metro LA to know, and of course they won’t improve neither airport to handle the extra traffic.

“You can still do it somewhere else!” is the siren call of the NIMBYs

Oh, thanks. I’m going to guess that you live in the area, do you know why the airport is closing? The article didn’t mentioned, is it because of costs or just local residents being annoying?

I don’t live in Santa Monica, but the same cycle happens at all GA airports
Airport is built
People build houses close to airport
People decide airport is bad and needs to go away

We lost plenty of smaller airpors and even racetracks this way. People would buy houses near those places fully aware of the sound and traffic issues they bring, buy the place either way, and later complain and sign petitions to close them. Just move somewhere else

wrong direction though ... west LA is for the gentrifiers, you need to head east for the fast n furious stuff.
